Summer is ending and fall is quickly approaching, which means cooler temperatures, pumpkin spice lattes, and, most importantly, spooky shows on TV.

To welcome the season of goblins and ghouls, families across the country are looking forward to their favorite scary entertainment.  According to People, last year 72% of families with kids under 16 enjoyed Halloween movies together and 63% introduced their favorite Halloween classics to their children. As the popularity of scary TV series on streaming platforms increases, it’s likely even more people will curl up on their couches at home to binge the newest bone-chilling shows.

In a follow-up to our 2019 report, we looked at the most searched spooky TV shows in each state to find out which spine-tingling series are scaring families this year.

Frightening Findings

  • Although Lucifer has the lowest Metacritic score on our list, it is the most googled spooky series nationwide, following the release of the show’s sixth and final season last month. The series is set in Los Angeles and was most searched in five western states: Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.
  • As the most-searched show in 10 states, psychological thriller You was the second most googled series overall ahead of its third season premiere on October 15. You has won both the Elle Style and ReFrame Stamp awards, and the show’s second season was watched by 54 million households, making You Netflix’s seventh most watched original series.
  • The Handmaid’s Tale is the third most popular spooky series across the country, with five states searching for it most, including Massachusetts, the state where the series takes place. The science-fiction show has the highest Metacritic score on our list at 83. In 2019, the Guardian ranked The Handmaid’s Tale 25th on the news site’s list of the 100 best TV shows of the 21st century.
  • Supernatural and American Horror Story tied for the fourth most popular spooky series, with each being most searched in four states. Supernatural has been nominated for 127 awards and won 37, including the 2019 Teen Choice award. American Horror Story has won 128 of its 389 award nominations, including six Primetime Emmy Awards.
  • Netflix’s original thriller series Squid Game is on track to become the most popular series in the platform’s history, but it only topped the charts in two states. The series premiered on September 17 and has topped Netflix’s drama charts in all 83 countries where the platform is available.

Methodology

We compiled a list of the 50 most popular spooky shows based on data gathered from Ranker, ScreenRant, and IGN. We then found each show’s search volume and plugged the 11 most searched shows into Google Trends to see which show was searched most by each state in the past 12 months.
