Survey Reveals Which Sitcom Families Americans Wish They Were Part Of

Americans love their favorite fictional TV families, and lately, they’ve spent a lot of time with them.

According to data from Nielsen, in 2020 there was a substantial increase in time Americans spent watching their favorite family TV shows, from a jump of 35% for Full House to a huge spike of 392% for Family Matters.

Along with these nostalgic classics and new favorites like Bob’s Burgers and Black-ish, Americans watch a variety of shows with a diverse collection of lovable (or not so lovable) TV families.

This made us wonder, if Americans had the chance to be a part of any of the families they watch on TV, which families would they pick? Here’s what we found out.

And the Survey Says…

  • The Belchers from Bob’s Burgers are the TV family that the highest number of Americans wish they could be a part of. Out of the 18% of respondents that want to be a part of this family, 46% said it is because they are very supportive.
  • The Griffins from Family Guy were the top TV family that Americans are happy not to be a part of, followed by the Simpsons from The Simpsons and the Bluths from Arrested Development
  • Out of all the respondents who said they wanted to be a part of a TV family because they wished they were that close with parents and siblings, 65% were women.
  • Family support is the main motivation to be part of a certain TV family, according to 36% of respondents.

After digging into our survey, we were curious to see how the list of most popular families compared to which sitcom was most popular in each state.

Interesting Findings

  • The Simpsons is the most popular family sitcom nationwide, with 15 states googling it most. The show is the longest-running American sitcom and was named the twentieth century’s best television series by Time Magazine. The series has won 178 awards including 34 Primetime Emmy Awards.
  • That ‘70s Show is the second most popular sitcom, with 11 states searching for it most, including Wisconsin, the state where the series takes place. Good news for fans of the show—in October, Netflix ordered a spin-off of the series that will be titled That ‘90s Show.
  • The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is the third most popular family sitcom, with seven states searching for it most. The series has won eight awards, including two NAACP Image Awards. A reboot of the series, Bel-Air, is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.
  • The fourth most searched family sitcom was The Goldbergs, with five states googling the series most, including Pennsylvania, the state where the series takes place.

Methodology

We compiled a list of the 30 most popular family sitcoms according to ScreenRant, Moms.com, and Yard Barker and found the search volume of each show in Semrush. Then, we plugged the 12 most searched shows into Google Trends to see which show was searched most in each state in the past 12 months. Finally, we surveyed 1000 Americans on Pollfish to learn which TV families Americans wish they were a part of.
